About the position

The Chief Investment Office (CIO) organization is responsible for the management of domestic and international insurance investment portfolios of Prudential Financial Inc and affiliates. The team is responsible for the strategic and tactical asset allocation of the overall portfolios, relative value assessments, researching and developing investment opportunities as well as the active portfolio risk management for the insurance portfolios.

The Portfolio Strategist will be responsible for the overall strategic and tactical asset allocation of the $475 bn General Account, researching investment opportunities or trading strategies, supporting market assumption research and engaging with internal and external asset managers on executing investment strategy. This includes serving as liaison with asset managers, segment CIOs and portfolio managers, as well as other corporate constituents such as Global Hedge Management, Enterprise Risk Management, Treasury, Tax, Finance and Actuarial.

The Portfolio Strategist will contribute to the CIO office’s role of supporting the business segments by demonstrating a deep understanding of different product liability structures and asset liability management, developing strategic and tactical asset allocations, utilizing the PGIM asset origination capabilities and consistently applying a disciplined risk management framework. The General Account portfolios are broadly diversified across asset classes, industry sectors, geographic regions, and issuers and are invested primarily in fixed income, real estate and equity. The unique liability mix supported by the portfolios result in an extensive mix of investment and asset liability challenges.


This role reports to the Managing Director, Head of Portfolio Strategy Group.

The Portfolio Strategist will work closely with the segment CIOs, portfolio managers and asset managers to direct and manage asset managers to facilitate meeting portfolio and business objectives.

In performing this role, the Portfolio Strategist will operate under the guidelines and limits set by Prudential’s Senior Asset Liability Committee (ALCO), The Investment Committee of the Board as well as the business unit objectives.


Engage with CIO partners to develop the Strategic Asset Allocation

Identifying and facilitate the execution of relevant Tactical Asset Allocation opportunities

Collaborating with asset managers and managing related performance to outperform assigned benchmarks

Assessing asset manager performance versus the market and peers, making changes or reallocations as needed

Lead the CIO Relative Value Strategy forums which involve participation by chief economists and asset class specialists from investment banks and asset management firms, as well as PGIM’s internal strategists.

Provide oversight and coordinate of key CIO activities including investment forecast, facilitates quarterly portfolio reporting by PGIM asset managers and provide portfolio and market content.


10-15 years of relevant portfolio management experience with large portfolios

Deep capital markets knowledge with experience in managing a variety of asset classes including fixed income, real estate and equity

Experience with managing third party asset managers and benchmarking performance

Experience managing asset allocation processes, portfolio construction, and tactical investment strategy development

Working knowledge of asset liability management and varying liability structures

Strong communicator, coordinator and thought partner; comfortable and effective partnering with senior level executive team

Excellent project management skills Strong management and leadership experience

Preferred candidates would have a CFA designation and/or MBA.
