About the position

The Vice President, Strategic Marketing will report directly to the Chief Marketing & Strategy Officer of Prudential Retirement and is responsible for leading the Retirement Strategic Marketing practice. He/she will help build and lead a high caliber team of strategic marketing professionals. Direct reports to this role include two vice presidents leading marketing strategy for Retirement’s primary market segments (Full Service Solutions and Investment & Pension Solutions) as well as a third Vice President leading Marketing Initiatives & Innovation. Key partners within Marketing will include the Head of Marketing Execution, a function set up to drive the execution of the marketing agenda.
The head of Strategic Marketing will work closely with business leaders to refine and articulate the Retirement business value proposition and brand promise and develop and drive an integrated strategic marketing plan that supports business objectives around growth, retention and profitability. He/she will engage heavily with our Sales and Strategic Relationship group and our Client Services Group, in addition to other constituents across the business (Product, Customer Experience and Research, Finance).
In addition, this leader will work closely with corporate partners (Customer Office, Brand Marketing) and other division marketing leads to ensure alignment with the Corporate brand and foster partnership around cross division initiatives.
Success will be determined by:
  • Impact to sales, engagement, retention and profitable growth across Retirement’s two business lines
  • Ability to create a voice in the market place that creates differentiation and drives advocacy
  • Ability to put in place a low cost, scalable, low complexity operating model that enables the Marketing Execution operation to operate in a low cost, high impact fashion
  • Ability to bring the value proposition to life and drive positive change in the organization that reinforces the value proposition
  • Positive organization climate that encourages personal growth, team engagement and leads by example
Major Responsibilities
The VP, Strategic Marketing is responsible for leading an organization that is structured to partner with the business to drive growth and engagement. This includes:
  • Developing scalable, high impact solutions that create differentiation in the market place
  • Managing within a particular budget and making trade-offs and choices to drive high impact solutions using the best methods possible
  • Ensuring an “end-to-end” mindset and connectivity across all marketing actions
Marketing Strategy and Execution:
  • Coach and drive marketing teams to develop high impact and focused marketing strategies and execution plans that are designed to reinforce the brand and value proposition, drive growth, retention and engagement among various constituents. Ensure plans are fully integrated and priorities are set across the different functions.
  • Ensure marketing strategies reduce cost and complexity and are repeatable and scalable. Put in place a framework to test, learn and continuously improve upon actions.
  • Emphasize deep customer insight (participant, member, advisor and plan sponsor) as the center of all marketing plans.
  • Ensure marketing spend is allocated and aligned properly to drive maximum impact.
Brand and Value Proposition:
  • In alignment with the Corporate Brand positioning, uncover the Prudential Retirement Brand and Value Proposition. Uncover the “reasons to believe”, articulate key proof points and develop strategies to bring actions into alignment with the value proposition where there may be misalignment. Work closely with the head of customer experience in bringing the value proposition to life and driving internal advocates.
  • Uncover deep customer insight and work to embed these insights into marketing actions and in other areas of the company.
  • Ensure the brand and value proposition comes to life at each touch point and is fully reflected in the Marketing Strategies.
Marketing Initiatives:
In order to create competitive advantage in the market, there are opportunities to find new ways to win, create differentiation within key segments and test new methods to drive growth and engagement. As part of the Marketing Strategy group, assist in developing a high performance team focused on uncovering new opportunities and actions. This team will need to be able to lead initiatives, drive concept testing, lead innovation exercises and develop deep segment expertise in key markets.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate with have strong business and strategic marketing experience with a proven track record of leading teams to create growth and market differentiation.   Other relevant qualifications are:
  • Minimum of 10-15 years of measurable experience in consumer packaged goods firms and/or financial institutions
  • Experience with B2B and B2C marketing
  • Experience with digital marketing and new marketing trends
  • MBA or similar advanced degree required
  • Well-honed consulting skills enabling the individual to work with others to elicit information, to think objectively and analytically and to influence outcomes positively
  • Demonstrated experience leading a varied team of professionals
  • Excellent leadership, communication, facilitation and presentation skills
  • Experience building a sustainable, profitable business while meeting the highest ethical standards
  • Exceptional quantitative and problem-solving skills, including financial modeling skills
  • Ability to quickly develop a deep knowledge of the company, industry, products and services
  • FINRA 6 & 26 licenses must be obtained within 120 days of hire
